Doodlebums Diapers Loan Nappy Buckets

 Terms and Conditions:

Abbreviations:

LNB    –           Loan Nappy Bucket                                        GSE     –           Grapefruit Seed Extract
SAPO  –           South African Post Office

1.  Nappies (two to three) are sent to you clean and disinfected with GSE (grapefruit seed extract).  Please return them to us washed and dried.

The nappies supplied by Doodlebums Diapers can be used for two weeks (14 days).  We would like to have the return tracking number by the end of the two week period.  It is the borrower’s responsibility to return the nappies via SAPO (with tracking number).  Please return the LNB and the nappies.  You can re-use the box the LNB was sent in.  You may keep the laundry detergent and the boerseep sample.

2.  Due to our current small loan library you can’t choose gender specific colours/prints.

3.  Nappies are offered on a first-come-first-served basis.  A waiting list may be in operation.

4.  We understand that sometimes nappies will be lightly stained but deductions will be taken from the deposit should nappies come back damaged or poorly washed.  This is to cover the cost of washing or replacing the nappy/nappies.

5.  Please use your own liner on the nappies during each use.  You may use disposable or reusable liners.  Cherubs sell a nappy liner which is available at most stores with a baby section (Checkers, Pick ‘n Pay, Spar).  Please note that the Cherubs liners are not flushable.  Please have a look at http://www.doodlebums.co.za/c205/Liners.aspx for more liner choices.

Washing instructions:

Preparation:

Remove all solids from the nappy before placing them in a dry bucket or wet bag.  You may use the bucket provided (the LNB).  If using pocket nappies, remove the inserts from the pocket before putting it in the bucket.

Please rinse a nappy that has been used overnight before storing it in a dry bucket.

Do not leave the nappies in a dry bucket for longer than two days.  You may add two drops of Tea Tree Oil to the bottom of the bucket if you like.

If the nappies have velcro, it is important to stick them together before you wash them or stick them to the little piece of material on the nappy for that function.  Otherwise the nappies will stick to each other.

Washing:

200 grams of Earthsap laundry powder is included with your LNB.  Use approximately 80g per nappy load.  You may rub the Boerseep (provided in your LNB) on stains before washing them in your washing machine.  Do not wash hotter than 40°C.  If you run out of Earthsap, wash nappies in laundry detergent free of optical brighteners, softeners, enzymes or any substance that could be harmful to the cloth nappy.  Use a natural detergent.

Do not soak the nappies.

Do not use any softener.  (Softener inhibits the absorption).

First do a cold rinse to remove the urine and any remaining poop from the nappies, then do a proper wash.  Finish with another rinse and make sure there are no bubbles (soapsuds) in the rinse water.   Using too much detergent could cause build up of residue which may lead to smelly nappies, lowered absorbency and nappy rash.

Drying:

Line dry in sun.  Alternatively they can be hung indoors on a clothing drying rack (clothes horse) or tumble dried on low.  Covers should not be tumble dried.  Inserts / prefolds can be tumble dried on a low heat setting.

The Sputnik Washing Machine (a.k.a. The Wonder Washer)

This week I received my own Sputnik.

I will be testing washing nappies in it and post my findings through trial and error.  Bear with me 🙂

You can purchase the Sputnik at http://www.doodlebums.co.za/pSPUTNIK001/Sputnik-Washing-Machine.aspx

It costs R399 and postage within South Africa is free (edit to add:  Please note that this was the price I paid in 2013, when I wrote this blog entry).

Here are some photos on the Doodlebums Diapers Facebook Page:  Sputnik Album

With the Sputnik washing machine it is advised to use warm water – this helps to create pressure in the Sputnik.  Please do not exceed recommended temperatures stated on the garment label.  Most nappies can be washed safely at 40°C.  A liquid detergent dissolves better than a powder detergent.

The Washing Instructions that comes with the Sputnik gives you a Load Chart, Washing Chart and Temperature Chart.

For washing nappies, the following applies:

“Very absorbent materials may require more water but do not exceed amounts listed.  If Necessary, reduce the size of the load.”

Our first Sputnik washing exercise went like this:

I took a few soiled nappies from my dry nappy bucket and weighed them.  It included various brands and nappies I used overnight on both my kids.  I normally rinse nappies used through the night.  So that made my load a little heavier I’d say.  In total it was about 7 nappies.  It included Cherub Tree pockets, Snugglybum pockets, Bumgenius Elementals, Snappy Nappy and a Bam+Boo Baby bamboo nappy (plus ultra night time booster).  This load weighed 2,1kg.

I put them in the Sputnik and then added 7 liters of cold water (I now know it should have been 6 liters and my load should have been smaller – one less nappy maybe).  Reading the washing instructions, 6 liters of water seems to be the maximum amount recommended.  I then rinsed my nappies for about a minute.  Drained the Sputnik.

Notice I had the water release pipe facing up.  Obviously it works better facing down.  I got distracted with those little hands helping me…

Once drained I added 6 liters of warm water (from tap) and 7,5ml Earthsap Laundry Liquid.

I then washed by turning the Sputnik for 2 minutes.  Drained the water (this time the water release pipe was facing down!).  Added 6 liters of cold water for a rinse.  I rinsed by turning the Sputnik for about a minute.

Obviously the Sputnik doesn’t have a “spin” option like with an automatic washing machine.  I removed the nappies and squeezed out excess water.  Then I did the sniff test with each piece of laundry!  Yes, I really sniffed them all.  Someone hand me a gold star…

All the nappies, except for one, smelled clean!  Because only one nappy didn’t pass the sniff test I would recommend either rinsing for longer or doing a third rinse cycle with new water.  I will test this and let you know my findings.  The nappy that didn’t pass the sniff test was a Bumgenius Elemental which was pooped in.  No stain problems (thank you Boerseep), but there was a hint of poop scent….  And that wasn’t the only poop nappy that was in this load.  I think the Snugglybum was pooped in too.  All “ploppable poops” by the way, in case you have got some murky looking laundry water in your mind’s eye right now.  Wrong mental picture! 🙂

I will update soon with more Sputnik nappy washing experiences!

Please let me know if you have any questions or things you’d like me to test in the Sputnik.
