There is a slight buzz around this affair…. as there should be! ūüôā

The Construction of a Hippie Safari Premium hybrid fitted

All diapers are hand made by a mom at home.
A hybrid fitted is a cloth nappy with a water resistant fleece sewn into the nappy, replacing PUL. The benefits of fleece as a water barrier¬†versus¬†PUL is that fleece is¬†breathable¬†and allows for adequate¬†air circulation to baby’s skin. Polyester fleece repels urine away from the outer of the nappy and back into the absorbent parts of the nappy. It is a material that is able to keep the outside of your baby’s nappy¬†feeling dry for up to 4 hours, the average amount of time between diaper changes. This means you can use the nappy without a cover although it does need a cover to be completely waterproof. We recommend pairing the nappy with our Hippie Safari fleece soakers for an effective, bullet proof nighttime solution.
Our front snapping nappies are designed to fit babies from 5kg Р18kg. Each nappy is stocked with a fold down rise, allowing for a perfect fit for babies both big and small.
Our front snapping nappies feature cross over wings. This is to allow for a generous fit on larger babies, and a snug fit on the tiny babies, too.
The soaker is snake style and is made up of 4 layers of bamboo fleece when folded and snapped into the nappy. Each nappy also comes with a booster for use with heavy wetters at nap time and overnight.

A hybrid fitted is the best of both nappy worlds, perfect for those who are seeking both a breathable nappy and a long lasting nappy. Wrap a cover on baby for over night use and end the night time Nappy woes – this nappy will ensure that you wake up with dry sheets in the morning. If you’re going out with baby, simply use a cover.

Firstly, for those unfamiliar to this very important event:  The Hippie Safari hybrid fitteds are nappies made by a WAHM in Cape Town.  Sold exclusively on Doodlebums.  She has had two stockings previously and the last one was sold out in 37 minutes!  A stocking is when a batch of freshly made nappies become available for purchase.  See it as when the Doodlebums online store becomes stocked with these squishy new nappies.  You need to be a registered user on the Doodlebums online store.

The stocking will happen on Friday, 11 April 2014.  It will go live at 8:30pm South African time as I first need to see to my two tots before the Hippie Safari fun starts.

What to expect:

On the night the stocking goes live, you will ensure that whichever device you use, to give you access to the internet, is fully charged (with power and air time if applicable!). ¬†This is the perfect opportunity for your partner and kids to have some quality time together so you can focus…. ūüėČ ¬†Go to the Doodlebums online store, click on Shop by Brand and click on Hippie Safari. ¬†A few minutes before the confirmed time which the stocking will go live, you will start to press F5 (refresh) to keep refreshing the page so you see them become available as soon as possible. ¬†The reason you do this is because your browser won’t refresh on its own. ¬†Most work from cache and that’s not as interesting a topic as cloth nappies right now…. so we will focus on what you need to do next:

As soon as you see the Hippie Safari Nappies click on “view product details”. ¬†Scroll down and make your selection from the list, click “add to cart” and click “checkout”. ¬†You need to complete your order as fast as you can. ¬†Only once you have placed your order and received an order number you have been successful! ¬† First to checkout, first to score = First come, first serve. ¬†Please keep in mind that you might need to select a different print than the one you ordered as sometimes two shoppers checkout at exactly the same time. ¬† If you want other products from the Doodlebums store too, it is best to place them in your cart before the stocking goes live.

The same evening I will e-mail your invoice with the Doodlebums banking details on it. ¬†As soon as payment is received we will post your Hippie Safari products to you ūüôā

Prices per nappy will be around R200.  Prices will be confirmed a day before stocking.  A preview album and more details will also be loaded onto the Doodlebums Facebook page.  You guys will be in for a few surprises!

Please note no discounts will be given on the Hippie Safari stocking.

Afterwards there will be a competition:    6 lucky people stand a chance of winning a sample size of the new Little Ladybugs handmade soothing bum salve. This competition will become active after the stocking.  We will post a score thread on the Doodlebums Facebook page and all you have to do (once you received your invoice) is to comment with your score! Winners will be randomly drawn  and your bum salve will be included in your package.

Fun times ahead! ūüėÄ

1.  Nappies (two to three) are sent to you clean and disinfected with GSE (grapefruit seed extract).  Please return them to us washed and dried.

The nappies supplied by Doodlebums Diapers can be used for two weeks (14 days).¬† We would like to have the return tracking number by the end of the two week period.¬† It is the borrower’s responsibility to return the nappies via SAPO (with tracking number).¬† Please return the LNB and the nappies.¬† You can re-use the box the LNB was sent in.¬† You may keep the laundry detergent and the boerseep sample.

2.¬† Due to our current small loan library you can’t choose gender specific colours/prints.

3.  Nappies are offered on a first-come-first-served basis.  A waiting list may be in operation.

4.  We understand that sometimes nappies will be lightly stained but deductions will be taken from the deposit should nappies come back damaged or poorly washed.  This is to cover the cost of washing or replacing the nappy/nappies.

5.¬† Please use your own liner on the nappies during each use.¬† You may use disposable or reusable liners.¬† Cherubs sell a nappy liner which is available at most stores with a baby section (Checkers, Pick ‘n Pay, Spar).¬† Please note that the Cherubs liners are not flushable.¬† Please have a look at http://www.doodlebums.co.za/c205/Liners.aspx for more liner choices.

Washing instructions:

Remove all solids from the nappy before placing them in a dry bucket or wet bag.  You may use the bucket provided (the LNB).  If using pocket nappies, remove the inserts from the pocket before putting it in the bucket.

Please rinse a nappy that has been used overnight before storing it in a dry bucket.

Do not leave the nappies in a dry bucket for longer than two days.  You may add two drops of Tea Tree Oil to the bottom of the bucket if you like.

If the nappies have velcro, it is important to stick them together before you wash them or stick them to the little piece of material on the nappy for that function.  Otherwise the nappies will stick to each other.

200 grams of Earthsap laundry powder is included with your LNB.¬† Use approximately 80g per nappy load.¬† You may rub the Boerseep (provided in your LNB) on stains before washing them in your washing machine.¬† Do not wash hotter than 40¬įC.¬† If you run out of Earthsap, wash nappies in laundry detergent free of optical brighteners, softeners, enzymes or any substance that could be harmful to the cloth nappy.¬† Use a natural detergent.

Do not soak the nappies.

Do not use any softener.  (Softener inhibits the absorption).

First do a cold rinse to remove the urine and any remaining poop from the nappies, then do a proper wash.  Finish with another rinse and make sure there are no bubbles (soapsuds) in the rinse water.   Using too much detergent could cause build up of residue which may lead to smelly nappies, lowered absorbency and nappy rash.

Line dry in sun.  Alternatively they can be hung indoors on a clothing drying rack (clothes horse) or tumble dried on low.  Covers should not be tumble dried.  Inserts / prefolds can be tumble dried on a low heat setting.

Night Time Solutions

As you know by now, my cloth nappy stash consists of Cherub Trees predominantly.  That is what I started with.  (And I am still using them on my kids).

I always used to visit the New Zealand site for Cherub Tree and noticed their night time solution nappy. ¬†I really wanted one because a Cherub Tree pocket nappy with 1 microfibre and 1 hemp insert didn’t do the trick overnight. ¬†I asked the owner then (Simone) of Cherub Tree SA whether there was a possibility of bringing some of those nappies to SA. ¬†First she sent me one to try and I loved it. ¬†Then she specially ordered some for me. ¬†Keep in mind, at this stage (2010/2011) there wasn’t a trifold option yet. ¬†I loved them and I was very happy to eventually have a night time solution.

The Cherub Tree night nappy is a Bamboo Velour nappy. ¬†Description off the Cherub Tree SA website (www.cherubtree.co.za): ¬†“Easy to use, one size fits all nappy with the absorbent parts of the nappy sewn and snapped in. ¬†¬†Each nappy has one sewn insert and one snap in insert. ¬†Each insert is made up of two layers of bamboo fleece with one layer of microfibre sandwiched between. ¬†Additionally these nappies are lined with absorbent bamboo fleece making a¬†thirsty seven layers of absorbency in an ultra-trim fitting, quick drying nappy.”

I don’t have many pics of Dieter in the Cherub Tree night nappy as I didn’t ‘document’ as much as I do now, seeing that cloth nappies is my business. ¬†But I will make a point of taking some one evening and then update this post.

With my daughter it wasn’t that easy. ¬†Being premature her skin is a lot more sensitive. ¬†I tried the Cherub Tree night nappies on her and it would leave her nappy area red in the morning. ¬†So I continued using disposable nappies for a night time solution for her. ¬†For a long time….

A few months ago a company contacted me wanting to have their product listed on Doodlebums. ¬†Of course I first had to try it…. ūüôā ¬†And I did and it was a solution for my daughter, Vica! ¬†Snappy Nappy!

Snappy Nappy is a hybrid system.  You have the cover (made out of PUL) and sized inserts (small 3-6kg, medium 6-10kg, large 8-15+kg) which you snap into the cover.  When your baby needs to be changed you only remove the insert and replace it with a clean one.  If required, you only wipe the inside of the cover.  So you reuse the same cover a few times before washing it.  It is one of the economical solutions available in South Africa.  You get day inserts and night inserts.  The day and night insert snaps into each other and then into the cover.  It is bulky, but works for us!  Then again, most night time solutions are more bulky than the day time nappies.  The day insert has a microfleece layer on top and that gives a stay dry effect.  I believe that is what makes the difference for Vica.

Lately Dieter’s Cherub Tree night nappies would be more and more soaked in the morning. ¬†He is 3 years and 4 months old. ¬†He weighs 15kg. ¬†This is bound to happen. ¬†First I added a Cherub Tree hemp insert folded double into the front of the nappy (where he pees). ¬†This did the trick for a while. ¬†Then I started adding a trifold (also from Cherub Tree). ¬†This also did the trick. ¬†But the nappy was still damp on the outside. ¬†Well, to be honest, more than just damp. ¬†He pees a lot! ¬†I now cover his CT night nappy with a Hippie Safari soaker. ¬†Those soakers are great! ¬†A soaker is a cover made out of fleece (This fiber will keep moisture contained. Polyester will not absorb, but instead traps moisture between its fibers and allows it to evaporate. As it is breathable it allows air through to the skin lessening the chance of nappy rash or irritation. ). ¬†So the HS soaker helps to keep his clothing dry. ¬†I have been doing that for months now.

I have since bought a few Bam+Boo Baby ultra night time boosters to try with a Bam+Boo bamboo nappy for another night time solution. ¬†You have to wash the boosters a few times to reach maximum absorbency. ¬†Which I have done. ¬†And last night I tried it for the first time on Dieter. ¬†To be safe, I put a HS soaker over it too. ¬†It worked! ¬†NO dampness on the outside so the soaker wasn’t necessary. ¬†We are trying it again tonight. ¬†Will keep you posted!

Leave a reply and share your night time solution with me.
